Utility Work at Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride Begins Monday, October 26

Utility Work at Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride Begins Monday, October 26

Beginning on or about Monday, Oct. 26, and continuing through the end of the year, Dulles Corridor Metrorail Project crews will be installing water and sewer lines that will serve the future Herndon Metrorail Station now under construction in the median of the Dulles International Airport Access Highway (DIAAH).  The work will take place near the Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride facility on Sunrise Valley Drive.

Utility Location Begins Monday, Oct. 26:
First, the exact location of existing utilities must be identified. The work requires the use of a vacuum excavation truck that is approximately the size of a large utility van. The truck will be positioned in a portion of the current Kiss & Ride Drop-Off Area and will be used to excavate 8 to 10-inch diameter holes of varying depths.  This work will take approximately one to two weeks to complete and should cause minimal disruption to Park & Ride activities.

Kiss & Ride Drop-Off Relocation Effective Monday, Nov.2:
When existing utilities have been identified, the current Kiss & Ride will be relocated to provide room for a drill to begin tunneling north toward the Herndon Station.  A temporary Kiss & Ride lot will be added to the surface lot directly across from the Park & Ride facility's garage entrance. The temporary Kiss & Ride lot is scheduled to open late-October to early November.

Bus Bay Closures:
With tunneling to the north complete, crews will redirect the drill to the south.  The tunneling will necessitate the closure of Bus Bays F and G.  A temporary bus stop will be constructed to ensure that Fairfax Connector service continues without interruption.

The utility project work also will require intermittent lane closures and detours.  Specific times and dates for all construction activities that will significantly alter the way drivers and pedestrians use the Herndon-Monroe Park & Ride facilities will be announced in advance of the work.
